Introduction
A great install can only last as long as your between-wash maintenance allows. Neglecting your extensions between wash days leads to tangling, dryness, frizz, and a much shorter lifespan. The good news: a consistent, simple routine can keep your extensions looking freshly installed for weeks.
Daily Brushing Is Non-Negotiable
Even if you do nothing else, brush your extensions gently every single day. Tangles that sit for days become matted sections that are nearly impossible to reverse. Use an extension-safe loop brush or a soft paddle brush. Start from the ends, hold the hair above the area you're brushing to minimize tension on attachment points, and work your way up.
Moisturize Without Over-Saturating
Human hair extensions lose moisture over time because they're no longer connected to a scalp producing natural oil. A light leave-in conditioner or hair oil applied to the mid-lengths and ends 2–3 times per week keeps extensions soft and manageable. Avoid applying heavy products directly to bonds or weft attachment points, which can cause slippage.
Nighttime Care Is Where Most Damage Happens
How you sleep with your extensions matters enormously. Cotton pillowcases create friction that causes frizz, tangling, and breakage. Switch to a silk or satin pillowcase, or wrap your hair in a silk scarf or bonnet before bed. Loosely braiding or twisting your hair into 1–2 large sections before bed also prevents major tangling overnight.
Manage Sweat and Moisture
If you work out regularly, scalp sweat can cause extensions to tangle and the bonds to weaken more quickly. After exercising, gently smooth the hair back, apply a light oil to the ends, and allow to air dry. Avoid aggressively scrubbing your scalp or manipulating wet extensions right after a workout.
When to Use Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is your best friend between wash days — especially for the roots and scalp area. It absorbs excess oil and refreshes the style without wetting the extensions. Apply sparingly at the roots only, massage gently, and brush through. Don't let product build up on the bonds or wefts for too long, as buildup can weaken attachment.
